The Iraaghi…

Is one of Hunza’s most treasured traditional caps for women—an exquisite form of embroidery that has been passed down for centuries. What makes this craft extraordinary is its technique: the designs are stitched without drawing or tracing on the fabric. Every motif, every color combination, and every geometric detail is created purely from memory, skill, and years of mastery.

These caps are crafted using a linen-and-wool blend, chosen for its durability, warmth, and ability to hold dense cross-stitch embroidery. Each Iraaghi is made up of three key elements:

✨ Ikhuto (Top Panel)

The intricate star-shaped patterning that crowns the cap. This is where the artisan expresses her creativity and cultural symbolism, stitching colorful geometric motifs entirely freehand.

✨ Yander (Perimeter Border)

The circular band that wraps around the cap. It carries repeating patterns that represent harmony, protection, and the traditional identity of Hunza.

✨ Thuna (Bottom Border)

The foundational band that completes the piece. Its patterns traditionally signify grounding, strength, and connection to heritage.

A Dying Art We Aim to Protect

Sadly, the craft of making Iraaghi caps is in decline. Only a small number of elderly artisans in Hunza continue to practice this labor-intensive embroidery. By offering these caps commercially—at fair, dignified compensation—we aim to revive this heritage, support the artisans, and preserve an art form that deserves to live on.

Each Iraaghi takes weeks to stitch, making every piece unique, collectible, and deeply meaningful.

If you value cultural craftsmanship, heritage textiles, and authentic handwork, an Iraaghi is more than an accessory—it is a story, a legacy, and a piece of Hunza’s soul.
