The Surnaie has always been more than an instrument.
In the mountains of Gilgit-Baltistan, its piercing, melodic voice symbolized celebration, unity, and identity. Its sound once echoed across high-altitude polo grounds and flowed through stone-built villages, connecting people through rhythm and tradition.
Despite its depth, the Surnaie remains a hidden gem outside the region, known to few, mastered by even fewer.
Handmade From Apricot Wood
Each Surnaie we offer is hand-carved from seasoned apricot wood, a material native to Hunza and cherished for its durability and warm tonal character.
Apricot wood gives the instrument its sharp yet rich voice, creating a sound that feels both ancient and alive.
Artisans select, season, and shape each piece by hand, ensuring authenticity that machines can never replicate. Every reed is tuned individually, making each Surnaie unique in tone and personality.
A Cultural First – Now Available Online
We are proud to be pioneers in offering the Surnaie online for the first time. For decades, this instrument was nearly impossible to access unless you traveled directly to remote villages and met traditional makers yourself.
Hunza Art is changing that by bringing this rare cultural treasure to musicians, collectors, and enthusiasts across Pakistan and around the world.
This launch is part of our broader mission to revive and preserve Hunza’s musical heritage. Alongside the Surnaie, we are also introducing other traditional instruments to keep our region’s soundscape alive.
Learn the Surnaie With a Master
For those who want to experience the Surnaie beyond ownership, we offer a dedicated Surnaie Mastery Course.
The program includes ten personal lessons over one month, taught by a seasoned traditional musician. You will learn breath control, reed handling, foundational scales, and classical Hunzai melodies.
The course is beginner-friendly, even if you’ve never played an instrument before, you will gain the confidence to perform by the end of the month. It’s a rare chance to learn a fading art directly from someone who has lived it.
A Legacy Worth Preserving
Buying the Surnaie is more than a purchase, it is an act of preservation. You are supporting local artisans, reviving an endangered musical tradition, and bringing a piece of Hunza’s soul into your home.
Whether you are a musician, a collector, a cultural explorer, or simply someone who values handmade authenticity, the Surnaie offers a story, an experience, and a living voice unlike any other.
